Maturity process: transmission-grid connection since April 2026

Since April 2026, transmission operators sort connection requests by how mature the project is. Reserving capacity takes more than a pin on a map.

What the process is for

Transmission capacity is scarce. A maturity process is meant to separate requests that carry a project from those that only block a point. TenneT and Amprion, among others, describe this publicly. Other transmission operators publish their own rules. There is not one identical national form.

On the distribution grid the same pressure has other names. Individual operators describe a reservation and evidence of planning maturity. Amounts, deadlines and documents sit in their conditions, not in a table on this page.

What projects are usually asked to show

Typical items are a specific site, a rough technical description, a timetable and a credible path to finance. Some operators also ask for evidence that the land is available or for a planning status. I read the current notice of the operator, I do not recite a national checklist.

An early enquiry without those documents is not a mistake. It is only easy to confuse with a reservation. Skipping a stage loses the request, or triggers a security deposit before the project can carry it.

What this means for development

The connection belongs at the start, not after the technology and the finance are fixed. Site, mode of operation and co-location with existing generation change which operator is responsible and which process applies.

I accompany that reading. Technical design and construction are not part of the mandate.

Reading of the processes described publicly since April 2026. The current notice of the responsible operator prevails. Not legal advice.

Common questions

Does the maturity process start on a fixed date?

Transmission operators have applied a maturity process since April 2026. The exact start and the version are in each operator’s publication. Distribution grids follow their own rules.

Is there one list of maturity levels?

Not in the sense that every level asks for the same documents nationwide. I read the notice of the operator responsible for your point.

Does an existing offer replace the process?

An offer already granted is a different status from a new request. Whether an old statement still holds under today’s process is for the operator to say. It cannot be assumed.
