Co-location and overbuilding: storage on an existing grid connection

Co-location means the battery uses a connection that a PV plant or a consumer already has. Overbuilding means installed capacity sits above the agreed connection capacity, because not everything hits the grid at once.

What is different at an existing point

A new site needs a new request. A battery at an existing point starts with who the connection customer is, which capacity was agreed, and whether the contract allows export, import or both. The point stays. The way it is operated changes.

Metering then becomes the real work. Separating solar generation, grid import and battery operation depends on the meter setup. MiSpeL of 1 October 2026 governs mixed operation for the market premium and direct marketing, not the connection contract.

Overbuilding is not an automatic approval

Installed capacity above the agreed connection capacity is only acceptable if the operator allows it and the plant can be limited once that capacity is reached. Whether that is possible at your point is not a general rule on this page.

The same question returns for a construction-cost contribution and a reservation: does the battery trigger expansion, or does it stay inside existing capacity? The operator answers that from the connection rules.

Three topics that get mixed up

AgNeS, still a draft on 7 October 2026, is about network charges. MiSpeL is about separating supported electricity from grid electricity. The connection contract is about capacity and the point. Three texts, three responsibilities.

I sort which of the three is actually slowing your project. I do not build the plant and I do not market it.

In the same context

Not legal advice. The connection contract and the operator’s current conditions prevail.

Common questions

Can a battery simply share the existing PV connection capacity?

Only if the connection contract and the operator allow it. The connection customer, the agreed capacity and the permitted direction come first.

What does overbuilding mean?

Installed capacity is higher than connection capacity. That only works with a limit so that no more is exported or imported than agreed. Whether the operator allows it is case by case.

Does MiSpeL regulate co-location?

MiSpeL of 1 October 2026 regulates the split in mixed operation for the market premium and direct marketing. It does not replace the connection contract.
